The Deforestation Mapping Group/GLCF Science Group participated in NASA's
Land Cover Land Use Change Science Team Meeting at the University of
Maryland, January 20-22, 2004.
A poster was presented which outlined the study results for the LCLUC
project "Improvements in Landsat Pathfinder methods for monitoring
tropical deforestation and their extension to extra-tropical areas". The
poster included a map of forest cover and forest cover change across
Paraguay derived from satellite imagery and an outline of the accuracy
assessment strategy for the map.
Dr. John Townshend, Principal Investigator for the LCLUC project,
presented the GLCF REASON project and also made a programmatic
presentation for GOFC/GOLD.
GLCF Participates in 12th Federation Meeting and SEEDS Working Group Kick-Off Meeting
GLCF team members participated in the winter meeting of the Federation of
Earth Science Information Partners (ESIPs), and the first the SEEDS Working
Group Kick-Off Meeting, in Orlando, Florida, January 5-8, 2004. John
Townshend and Mike Smorul from GLCF hosted and presented a special breakout
session "Grid Technologies and the ESIP Federation", including Reagan Moore
from San Diego on the discussion panel. During this session, the GLCF work
on a SEEDS funded project was presented and expectations for its continued
growth within the Federation discussed through the wide audience.
Additionally, GLCF staff presented five posters in the main poster session,
and associate Mike Smorul made a separate presentation on the Storage
Resource Broker data grid, in a Technical Workshops session. The overall
Federation meeting was another success, bringing Earth science community
members into closer association. Following the Federation meeting, the SEEDS
Working Group Kick-Off meeting was attended by GLCF staff, primarily in the
Metrics and Technology working groups. The GLCF team looks forward to the
summer meetings.Click here for photos taken at the event.
