GLCF presents forest cover change study at event hosted by the Ambassador from Paraguay
The Global Land Cover Facility's Deforestation Mapping
Group presented products from its study of land cover
change in eastern Paraguay. The GLCF/DMG was invited to
display at a special benefit held to bring attention and
support for conservation of Paraguay's remaining tracts
of Atlantic Forest. The event was hosted on May 14 by
the Ambassador from Paraguay and the Latin American Ambassadors
Committee of The Many Hats Institute in collaboration
with the World Wildlife Fund and the Nature Conservancy.
The GLCF display included a map of forest change in eastern
Paraguay during the 1990s and media describing the data
and methods used to create the forest change products.
This material was reviewed and enthusiastically received
by representatives of the government of Paraguay, Paraguayan
conservation organizations, as well as conservation organizations
based in the United States. Her excellency, Ambassador
Leila Rachid de Cowles, said the materials should be very
effective in persuading the Paraguayan government of the
need for an aggressive forest conservation program.
The Landsat 7 satellite has not been functional since
late May, 2003. No imagery is available from this sensor
since the shutdown occurred. There is a possibility that
the sensor will become active again, but at what date
is uncertain. In the interval, the GLCF staff are ready
to assist with alternate orders of Landsat 5 or ASTER
acquisitions. Please contact the GLCF Data
Coordinator for further information.
The official word on the Landsat 7 sensor and satellite
is available at the USGS.
